Muchalat Lake on Vancouver Island is reached by taking the Gold River east road from the town of Gold River and then turning onto the nimpkish mainline, this road will take you right to the lake.
Muchalat Lake is quite large and has some great fishing available. There is an abundance of small rainbows and some cutthroat that can reach 1.5 kg. The lake also has some kokanee and dolly varden that can get pretty big as well. I have never been skunked at this lake, but most times you will catch many smaller trout, pan-sized and tasty. Occasionally you will hook into a big one and then your fighting a fish, it’s pretty exciting. Best fishing is by boat or canoe, kayaking here is a great way to fish as well. Fish out in front of any of the inflowing streams or troll out in front of the outflow river.
The lake has a very nice recreation site with a car-top boat launch with camping sites, you can reach this lake with a car as the road is quite good. The campsites are beautiful and the beach is nice for the kids, watch for the floating picnic table that finds its way around the lake.
There is plenty of wildlife and birds for your observation, you could see wolves, bears, cougars, elk, deer or one of our smaller forest creatures like squirrels, mink or raccoons. The scenery here is spectacular and a true wonder to behold, so don’t forget your camera.
I have camped here in the past and have always had a great fishing experience on the lake. There are nice sandy beaches here for the children to play on. The swimming is great here as well.
