The Douglas Spirea grows in great abundance all over the coast of BC, although a wild plant, it is considered a wonderful addition to any garden. I have one growing in my front yard, and it draws butterflies and birds to my gardens.
It is a shrub that grows to be 1 to 2 meters in height. Its common environment is moist sunny areas. It is capable to withstand drought once it is established, but it grows best in boggy areas, lake and stream banks, and other areas with lots of moisture.
The feature that most people recognize when they see this plant is the tall spikes of clustered, tiny pink flowers, which grow on the ends of the branches. The beautiful flowers of this plant attract butterflies, bees, and other insects. When it forms dense thickets, it is a perfect hiding spot for small mammals, green tree frogs, and birds.
Douglas Spirea is a beautiful addition to any landscape. Once planted, it only needs normal watering and the large beautiful clusters of tiny pinkish-red flowers make it worth the time watering. The flowers will make your garden look and smell great.
