Shearwater

The community of Shearwater was originally built as an antisubmarine base in 1941, it was during the second world war and defences were being built all along the coast of BC. In 1944, they abandoned the base. Soon after it was purchased and transformed into a fishing resort with a full-service marina. There was also a restaurant and motel. there are around 100 full-time residents in shearwater and the number is growing.

Shearwater Center, Shearwater BC, The figure in the yellow blanket is my wife’s grandfather, Charlie Moody. He was Chief Woyala.

The resort was recently sold (2022) and is now owned and operated by my wife’s people, The Heiltsuk Nation. The resort is now an incredible wilderness and eco-tour destination, offering a selection of wildlife tours as well as accommodations and mooring services. Shearwater is located on BC’s Central Coast in the Great Bear Rainforest.

The resort has full moorage services, plus a hotel that is open year-round. There is a fully stocked grocery store, liquor store and laundromat. There is a post office and full-service boatyard and marine store. There are many things to do during the summer months like kayaking, and paddle boarding. If fishing is your thing, you can hire a guide right on the wharf.
