The plant can reach up to 60 cm in height. There are a few basil leaves at the flower head with lacy fern-like leaves on the stem.  The flowers are small and bright yellow, they grow in clusters. I have not seen them north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, look for them in Garry Oak meadows.

First Nations would dig up the roots right after flowering and steam them in pits to eat. They could also dry them and keep them for up to 3 years. This plant can be used as a wash for swollen and broken limbs. The root is analgesic (pain relief) and stomachic (promotes appetite). It can be chewed or made into an infusion to be as a treatment for headaches and stomach complaints.
