Hoomak Lake Trail

The Hoomak Lake Trail is pretty nice, I stop here often to go down to the lake and hike left to the end of the lake. Sometimes I head right and follow this way until the trail heads to the right across a small bridge. is pretty nice, I stop here often to go down to the lake, turn left and hike to the end of the lake.

I love coming here in the fall for this event. You cross the little nameless creek that flows into the lake. From here, you travel further on and finally reach the parking area.

Believe it or not, this creek is a well-used spawning creek for coho salmon. I was just there, in August 2023, and the creek flow was quite low and slow. I hiked down the creek to see what I could see. All the pools still had water flow and were full of salmon fry. These fish will head out to sea down through the ponds at the north end of the lake and eventually reach Lukwa Creek. Then on to the Nimpkish River just above the falls, which will lead them to the sea. Two years later, they will return to spawn up this little nameless creek.

This is a wonderful series of trails to walk along. The lake is quite pretty. I have seen bears, elk, deer, pine martins, squirrels, beavers and many kinds of birds as I wandered along the trails. In the fall, the ground is covered by many types of mushrooms in every colour. This draws me here every fall after the rains arrive. It seems every year the variety is different.

When you park at the rest stop, you can head up past the building to reach the trail or head down the stairs to reach the lake and shoreline trails. Don’t forget your camera.
