The tiny Jordan River Village is located on the West Coast of southern Vancouver Island. Jordan River lies about 40 km north of Sooke. It is a great place to surf, surfing on Vancouver Island is a cold, wild and rough sport, sometimes the winds can be over 120 km an hour with some mighty waves. The water temperatures can be so low that hypothermia can set in very fast, just minutes and poor access to the best surfing beaches make surfing here a challenge for sure.
There is plenty to do in the area, you can hike the popular Juan de Fuca Marine Trail that begins at China Beach and runs for 47 km along the shoreline and through the coastal forests to Botanical Beach near Port Renfrew. Beach camping is permitted along the way.
For a pleasant drive, you can take the pacific marine circle tour, which incorporates West Coast Highway 14 from Victoria to Port Renfrew, it is an excellent way to explore the west coast of southern Vancouver Island. The wilderness route traces the coastline from Victoria through Sooke and Port Renfrew, continuing on to Cowichan Lake and the Cowichan Valley, and looping back down the Trans Canada Highway through Duncan and over the Malahat back to Victoria.
It’s an all-day adventure, you want to hit the road early to ensure you have lots of time or take your time and camp at one or more of the campgrounds along the way.
South of Jordan River is Sooke, north of Jordan River in Port Renfrew. Port Renfrew is the jewel of the west coast, where you can experience the wonder that has made the West Coast famous. Port Renfrew is the trailhead for both the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail and the West Coast Trail.
Wildlife viewing is at its best here, you could see grey whales, seals, sea lions, otters, mink, black bears, blacktail deer, wolves, cougars, seabirds, forest songbirds, and many of the raptors.
