The Liener River Bouldering Trail wanders along a scenic stretch of the Leiner River, It’s a beautiful little river just outside Tahsis on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Rock climbers like to practice their skills on the numerous, house-sized boulders that litter the slopes of the narrow valley. You climb under and over these boulders as you move along the trail.
Access to the trail is just east of the Leiner Bridge off the road to Tahsis, 3 km from town, on the upstream right bank. You can park on the town side of the bridge and walk to the trailhead on the other side. The trail is about 30 minutes long but is slightly strenuous with some rocks to climb. The ground is quite uneven and a good sturdy pair of hiking boots will save you from a twisted ankle.
Tahsis offers Climbers and cavers some of Vancouver Island’s best caving, climbing, and bouldering, including the Leiner Bouldering Trail. Two local caves are Upana Caves located along the Tree to Sea Drive, just before Bull Lake Summit coming from Gold River, and Coral Cave, located high on the mountainside overlooking the town of Tahsis.
Bald Eagles are a frequent sight in the Tahsis area and the surrounding coastal wilderness offers excellent wildlife viewing where you have a great chance of seeing bears, cougars, elk, deer, and many other animals including birdlife and marine life. Tahsis is well known for its Hummingbirds, who summer here in great numbers.
The views of the Leiner River are quite impressive and if the salmon are running, you can watch them in the thousands as they move up the river to spawn.
