Dougan Lake is one of the spots that I have always enjoyed stopping for a break when we travel down Vancouver Island. It’s a pretty lake. It is a small but well-known lake on the South Island. It is known for its fishing, particularly for Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat. It’s located near Duncan, just a few km from the community. The lake is stocked regularly, making it a popular spot for anglers, especially during March to June and September to November. It’s a relatively small lake, with a surface area of about 10 hectares.

This is farm country, and the lake is surrounded by farms. These farms have coexisted with this small lake in a manageable way for many years. Take the Dougan Homestead Farm, a multigenerational family farm for example. They have been cultivating the land bordering Dougan Lake for generations.

The Dougans have much more than farming going on, though; they have recently created a campground. It is nestled in the lush Cowichan Valley. Whether you’re looking to pitch a tent or park your small trailer, they have 10 spacious campsites for you to relax and connect with nature. Find out more

With close access to many wonderful places to visit, places like Cowichan Bay and wharf and museum and all the marvellous little shops on the waterfront.

There are many such small centres to visit. You could take a trip to Shawnigan Lake and its beaches, or hike out to Kinsol Trestle to see the wonders of the past. There are many trails in the area to satisfy the hikers.

I have always enjoyed hiking along the Cowichan River. There are many access points to the trail that follows this river; it’s a pretty cool river valley. Bring your camera to capture all the sights you can see in the area of Dougan Lake.
