The Fanny Bay Harbour is situated on southeast Vancouver Island, on Baynes Sound, it separates Vancouver Island and Denman Island. The harbour overlooks the Strait of Georgia and the Gulf Islands, with the Coastal Mountains as a backdrop. Fanny Bay Harbour is on the northern boundary of Lighthouse Country. It is a stretch of Highway 19 that runs along the shoreline from Qualicum Bay to Fanny Bay. There is a lighthouse at either end.
Visitors can usually be found surveying the shores of the harbour searching for the oysters. Fanny Bay is well known for its oysters. You could see mink here, there are many and if you look out in the harbour. Sometimes the Steller Sea lions can be found in the hundreds at the harbours’ wharf.
Killer whales, dolphins, and blackfish have been seen off the Fanny Bay Harbor, and at night you can see herons and other night birds along the shore, fishing. You could see raccoons as they come down to feed on shellfish. Black Tail deer frequent the upper shore grasslands, and eagles and hawks can be seen throughout the day.
For something completely different, you can visit Fanny Bay’s Wacky Woods Trail. I will leave it there as a mystery, if you want to learn more, you will have to visit here to find out.
To get to the woods, just head north on the old island highway past the Fanny Bay community hall and just past Jacob Road, you will see a yellow gate, it’s on the waterside of the highway. This trail runs along the waterfront, you will find several trails that head to the right, these will take you to the Wacky Woods. At the end of Bates Drive, on the right is the trail and the start of the Wacky Woods. Have fun.
