Nanaimo is located on the east coast of southern Vancouver Island. It is B.C.s sixth-largest city, it is also called the harbour city. It is a modern city with great nightlife, but you can also go biking, swimming, hiking, boating, sailing, kayaking, and scuba diving here and from the harbour, you can view wildlife, birds, whales, seals, sea lions, and many other creatures. This is a great place.

Nanaimo has a population of almost 85000 and is still growing fast. The downtown core has been revitalized and there is a brand-new museum, plus many great shopping opportunities in brand stores and great little boutiques, the places to eat range from awesome fast food to world-class dining.

If it’s been a while since your last visit, and you remember the Nanaimo of old, you will be quite surprised at how cosmopolitan the city becomes, the downtown waterfront is so beautiful now and the city core has been made into a wonderful place to walk around.

The downtown is now divided into three zones, The old city quarter with its heritage buildings and fine dining, the arts district filled with art galleries and quaint shops, then there is the revitalized harbour front walkway where you will find public squares, funky little shops, eateries, parks and a lagoon that you can swim in.

You can hop on a passenger ferry to Protection Island or Newcastle Island from the harbor. You can take a journey to Gabriola Island, an idyllic artist’s colony, and getaway spot, you can reach it from downtown by a car ferry. Gabriola is an awesome place to visit.

In the area, there are many lakes and rivers, trails, caves, beaches, and mountains. There are many hiking and biking trails. You can do almost anything here, even go bungee jumping.

The wildlife viewing is great at the lakes and rivers and the birdlife is incredible. You could see bears, whales, deer, elk and so many kinds of birds. Nanaimo truly is an awesome and modern city.

  1. Hello,

Do you know of any nature walks or guided tours to learn about foraging medicinal plants in the Nanaimo area? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
