Gilson Lake

Gilson Lake is one of those little jewels hidden in plain sight. I have always liked camping here or even just hanging out for a few hours to roast a wienie or a marshmallow or two. You reach this lake by driving out the Comox logging road until you come to the road to Quinsam Lake, turn here and continue until Quinsam Lake is visible.

You will be driving along an old train grade with a high bank on the left. Keep an eye out for a small left turn that goes up steeply for about 3 metres, drive up, and you are at the site on the shore of the Lake.

I found this spot years ago while I was mushroom picking. I must have driven past it so many times without really noticing it. Gilson Lake is a pretty lake, small but has fish to catch. I understand that a few lunkers are always pulled out in the fall. It is a great spot for camping or picnicking. The area is good for picking mushrooms or photographing them.

There is a wonderful mixture of birds in the area. I have seen elk, deer and bears here. Just up the road is Quinsam Lake, where the fishing is good. At one time, we used to drive right past the lake and come out on the ERT Road. Hunted many grouse on this road.

So if you’re looking for a new spot to visit, you might enjoy checking out the Lake, a true hidden jewel. Hope you remember your camera and take away a few great photos.
