Jervis Inlet

Jervis Inlet is located 95 km north of Vancouver, it is a very deep inlet on the BC Coast, in fact, it’s the deepest in BC. It is 89 km long and has a maximum depth of  670 metres.

I logged up close to the head of the inlet when I was just a young lad, again in my late twenties as a contractor for Frank Beban, Our camp was not too far past the entrance to Princess Louisa Reach, where you will find the Malibu Club Youth Camp. It’s a summer camp for rich kids who mostly hail from the USA. It’s set in the entrance to one of the prettiest places on earth, Princess Louisa Inlet is beautiful. There is a beautiful waterfall here. Chatterbox Falls can be found at the head of Princess Louisa Inlet. It is on the Loquilts River where it empties into the inlet. The falls are very popular with boaters from around the world.  If you follow the Loquilts River a short distance, you will reach the James Bruce Falls, at 840 metres, which is the highest falls in North America.

What I remember most about Jervis Inlet is just how steep it is there, it felt like you could drive uphill for 30 minutes, then stop to throw a rock off the edge of the road and hit the cookshack down below. But the beauty of this place made that ok.

At the mouth of Jervis Inlet a passenger and vehicle ferry operated by BC Ferries connects Earls Cove with Saltery Bay. It is part of the sunshine coast highway that runs (with a few ferry trips) from Vancouver to Comox on Vancouver Island. It is a great alternative to the Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo route and the sites are awesome.

The population is sparse on the shores of Jervis Inlet, and there is no road access to the area. Industry includes small operations in aquaculture, commercial fishing and logging. Tourism is going to play a big part in Jervis Inlet in the future.
