Adam River Falls

Over the years we have heard of the Adam River Falls. We heard it was located somewhere above the junction. We often thought about finding them, but somehow another adventure would present itself and off we would go, putting the falls on the back burner. Then late last fall, a young local Islander wrote Bud to ask if he knew the way in. Looks like it was time to locate these falls.

The first thing we did was go to Google Earth, where we located a possible location.  We figured it would be a big bushwhack to reach the spot.  As we began to pore over some old maps, we located an old, overgrown logging road that looked to be heading in the right direction.  So, back to Google Earth and a closer look for any signs of this old track in the forest. It looked like a decent way to get to the river.

Next was to load up the van with our camera gear, including the drone, our lunch, and head out for a look.  The old road was quite an easy stroll for the most part, it gets a bit thick just before you head down to the river on a trail. The way down leads you through a nice forest of decent-sized trees. At one point, you reach a fork in the path. Going left will take you down above the falls. It looked pretty tough to get a good photo here, and as we planned on droning up the river from below the falls at a later date, we spent little time here.

We went down along the river looking for interesting views until we came to the falls. Again, I tried to get a good shot of the falls with not much luck. As we went by the falls, we saw that they emptied into a huge deep pool from the canyon gorge. It was a bit of a scramble down into this area, using ropes where they were installed. After reaching the shore of this huge pool, we found quite a few large logs that required us to climb over some and crawl under others to reach an area of rocky bluffs on the outer edge of the pool.

We sat on a log and took in the view, and it was truly awesome. You could see the Adam River roaring out of the gorge, but not the falls further up.  This was too bad because a good wind had come up, and flying the drone was out of the question. It looks like another adventure will be on the to-do list.
