Gods Pocket Marine Park

Gods Pocket Marine Park is a new park. The 2,000-plus-hectare park provides some of the best coldwater diving in the world.  Jacques Cousteau called the park one of the best cold-water diving destinations in the world. Some say the nearby Browning Wall as being the best dive in the world.

Above the water, the Gods Pocket Marine Park protects a seabird breeding colony and important bald eagle habitats. It also has within its boundaries several known archaeological sites. The park is well used for enthusiasts who are looking for wilderness kayaking adventures. Fishing is phenomenal here, salmon, halibut and cod are all in abundance. Keep your eyes on the lookout for whales, dolphins and sea lions while you enjoy the incredible views. It is said that the Sasquach people live on these islands. So you really don’t know what you might see in this park.

Gods Pocket Marine Park is comprised of a group of islands at the entrance to Queen Charlotte Strait, including Hurst, Bell, Boyle, Crane Islands, and numerous smaller islets. These islands provide sheltered anchorage for boats that come to dive here.

Browning Wall is a steep drop straight down, it starts 30 meters above the surface. The rockface is covered in sealife, there are multi-coloured soft corals and sponges, and thousands of white anemones. The wall provides a home for nudibranchs, crabs and a variety of small and large fish. You can see starfish, sea urchins and possibly a basket star if you are lucky. Browning Wall may be the best-known dive site in this area, but it is not the only dive in the area.

This whole area is full of some of the best dive sites on the coast of BC.  Seven Tree Island is a beautiful dive that almost matches the wall in colour and density of species, to see a giant octopus, head to Clam Wall where they seem to grow to tremendous size. There are a few small Wolf Eels at Browning Wall but to see the big ones, you can head over to Fish Bowl or visit Fantasy Island.  In September, you can head to  Hooded Nudi Bay, the kelp is full of Melibi Nudibranchs, with their hoods facing the current to capture food, these are very large Nudibranchs.

There are several lodges in the area that offer dive packages and many more outfits in Hardy that service the dive industry. Have fun.
