Cathedral Grove is located in the Macmillan Provincial Park, Vancouver Island. There are many, many places to camp here besides the main campground. To get there from the Inland Island Hwy, you take the Port Alberni Hwy and follow it until you pass Cameron Lake, the park is just past the end of the lake when you are heading west. Cathedral Grove Park was created to protect and save a few hectares (157 hectares) of old-growth forest. I am quite pleased with this. This grove is a wonder. It is filled with many old giants, some as old as 800 years, and a few are over 90 meters tall and 9 meters in diameter. The trails are well constructed and flat, a perfect spot that is great for wheelchairs and buggies. A place where the elderly and less firm are able to get out and see these giant trees.

There are many trails in the grove, some short and others long, none are too long though. There are interpretive signs along the trails and many boardwalks. Some trails take you to the river, others lead you to some of the more majestic trees in the grove. Many of the trails come equipped with benches and viewing platforms.

There is parking alongside the roadway where the trails start, there are washrooms here. Pets must be on a leash, and you must clean up after them. Trails are located on both sides of the road, but please be careful crossing, there have been people struck by speeding cars.

There are other parks and beaches in the area that are all worth seeing, Cameron lake has a great beach and day-use area, it’s a great lake to windsurf and the old train trail on the other side of the lake has an awesome trestle that is part of the trail. Then there is little Qualicum falls park and Campground, awesome trails, and an incredible place to camp. Coombs is back towards Parksville and is a must-see.
