Morton Lake Provincial Park on Vancouver Island includes all of Morton Lake and a section of the shoreline on neighbouring Mohun Lake. Canoeing and kayaking is a popular activity in the park and Mohun Lake provides access to the Sayward canoe route, a 47-km route that follows a system of lakes.
There is a boat launch on Mohun Lake that you access here as well as a put-in for Morton Lake. The fishing is great in Mohun and once in a while, you will hook into a lunker rainbow or dolly.
When our children were young, we would bring them here for picnics and swimming, the day-use area is great with plenty of tables and fire pits. You can swim in Morton or Mohun from the campground. There are 24 sites here, they all have picnic tables and fire-pits, there are lots of outhouses throughout the park and plenty of beach access. There are hand-pump water stations for your convenience.
The wildlife here is awesome with bears, elk, deer, and other types of animals seen on a regular basis and the birdlife is incredible so if you come up for a visit, bring your camera and take home some memories.
You can reach Morton Lake via Hwy 19. Turn off at the Menzies mainline logging road about 10 minutes past the pulp mill. Follow the gravel road for 12 km, and then turn right onto the Morton Lake road and drive another 7 km to reach the park.
The road into this lake is one of my favourite places to view mushrooms, they grow in abundance along the shores of Mohun Lake, we fill our freezer every year with chanterelle mushrooms that we pick along here. There is nothing better than chanterelle mushrooms in the winter months.
