Jack Point Trail is a trail I had long been inclined to check this trail out. Something always got in the way. So this year, my wife and I were picking up our son, who was just returning from a shift fighting wildfire in the Yukon. We arrived to find our son was unable to make the ferry he was to be on, and needed to wait for the next sailing.

We found we had two hours to kill, so we thought, Let’s check out Jack Point Trail. Man, I gotta say, this is such a beautiful trail to wander about on. I am glad to finally get the chance to check it out. The trail takes you from Biggs Park right out to Jack’s Point. Along the way, you will get awesome views of the Nanaimo Estuary, Nanaimo, Gabriola and Protection Islands. The park is named after John Biggs, and the Point is named after Jack Point, both of whom were settlers.

Jack Point trail and point are well known as a great place to view wildlife. Birding is good, there is an abundance of seabirds that can be seen here, and sealions, seals and porpoises can be viewed right from shore. Keep your eyes peeled for shoreline mink running along the beaches. As you can see from the photos,

For the most part, the trail is very easy, although just after starting, you will run into stairs that take you past the bluffs. The park is about 30 acres. From the parking lot, the trail is 2.5 km in and out. There were lots of eagles sitting in the tree tops and what appeared to be swallows or martins catching flies in the failing light.
