The Quatse River Estuary is ranked amongst the top ten on Vancouver Island. The wildlife viewing here is awesome. The trails are beautiful and there is so much to see here.
All seven of our local waters salmon species spend time in the Quatse River Estuary at some point in life. The Quatse River Hatchery has been front and center in the work being taken to improve fish returns to the river.
The estuary is part of the Pacific Flyway corridor and provides critical wintering habitat for over sixty species of waterfowl and other waterbirds. You can see various birds of prey here along with many kinds of seabirds. The estuary provides habitat for over 100 kinds of bird species.
Various tree types are found in the area like the western hemlock, Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, maples of several kinds, red alder, and cottonwoods. There is thick undercover salal, huckleberry, and blueberry. It’s all covered in a thick mantel of moss. The shore has many types of sea plants and algae.
