Georgie Lake

The first time I came to Georgie Lake was to check if there was a Marine Harvest Facility on the lake. And yes, there was a fish rearing facility on Georgie Lake. Specifically. It was a netpen smolt rearing facility, and the fish were raised commercially by Marine Harvest Canada (formerly Stolt Sea Farms). Juvenile Atlantic salmon were recovered from Georgie Lake in 1997. Indicating the facility’s presence and the potential for escapes. The facility was shut down in 2009 due to an uncontrollable fungal issue.

The last time I visited this lake was to hike the Georgie Lake Trail that takes you to Songhees Lake.  My wife, Georgina and I had decided it was time to try out the Georgie Lake Trail. We wanted to see if we could make it to Songhees Lake at the end of the trail.

It was early spring. As it is only 4.8 km there and back, we felt it should only take a couple of hours. We were wrong. I forgot just how hard it can rain on the North Island. Maybe next time we make it.

Georgie Lake is a pretty lake with awesome views, and there is so much wildlife here. Birds are everywhere, and they seem to come in all shapes and colours. There is a sweet campground on the south end of the lake that has 5 or 6 lakeside camp sites. Plus a few spots in an outer area with room for some bigger units. There are a couple of spots at the trailhead for the Geargie Lake Trail.

I see on Google Earth that a hydro transmission line was put in that crosses the creek just a short distance from Songhees Lake. I think it might be another way to reach this lake; it does not look drivable, but perhaps it is walkable.
