Pineapple Weed is a very common annual broadleaf plant. It is found all over North America and even in all of Greenland. Pineapple weed inhabits agricultural land, turf, and other disturbed areas. When crushed, the leaves and flower heads smell similar to pineapple.
Find it growing in fields, orchards, nurseries, pastures, sandbars, riverbanks, roadsides, gardens, turf, landscaped areas, and other disturbed places.
The seed leaves are bright green, narrow, thick and fleshy, pointed or rounded at the tip and 1 mm wide.
Plants can grow up to 1 m tall but generally are found about 10 to 25 cm.
The crushed leaves of pineapple weed give off a sweet scent similar to pineapple and can be used to freshen up a room, just crush and place in a cloth bag and hang. Flowering takes place from May through August. Flower heads are found at the ends of stems, are egg-shaped, and are composed of densely packed, tiny, non-showy, yellowish-green flowers.
At maturity, flower heads shatter releasing tiny, lance-shaped, yellow, brown, or gray fruit that ranges from 1 to 2 mm long. Each fruit contains one seed.
