Georgie Lake Trail once was pretty nice, and it still is a great place to hike, but the trail is in disrepair and needs some loving care. The campsite at the trailhead is well looked after though. The boat launch is good to go. There are 9 sites here, some on the shores of Georgie Lake, great for the kids, with a few set back in the trees. All in all, a nice site on a pretty lake. The trail begins at the furthest campsite and is rough right from the start.
My wife Georgina and I had decided it was time to try out Georgie Lake Trail and see if we could make it to Songhees Lake at the end of the trail. It was early spring. As it is only 4.8 km there and back, we felt it should only take a couple of hours. We were wrong.
It was sunny with a bit of cloud cover when we started out, and it was cold. Where there were boardwalks, they were very slick and in most other parts of the trail, there was only mud. As we went along, the clouds got thicker. Then it began to rain, not too hard at first so our hopes were still up on reaching Songhees Lake. But about 2 klicks in it really began to rain and it was blowing now. We continued for a bit further, but Georgina was getting pretty wet. I looked around at the water dripping from the trees and realized we were going to make it. We turned around. I am sure we were almost there.
The way back was wet and cold, with mud as deep as our calves. Thankfully we were both in gumboots. The rain did not care as it just ran into our boots. Once we reached the van, we had to completely replace all our clothes and footwear. I must have poured a gallon of water from my boots. Looks like a return visit will be required soon, but during the summer months.
