(Sequoia sempervirens)
Although the Coast Redwood Tree has a small historical range that consists mostly of an area in California. There have been many successful plantings of these giant Redwoods in BC. One of these is Redwood Park in Surrey. A father gifted his 2 sons a large piece of land. It was logged and ready for farming. This was in 1834, and the sons were twin brothers, Peter and David Brown. The boys had other ideas; they began to plant trees from around the world on the property. They loved what they were doing. They built a treehouse on the land where they lived until passing on in the 1950s. They planted a grove of Redwoods that have now become giants. You can walk under these trails on paths.
Many other redwoods are growing in small groups or even individual plantings on the island. With climate warming now in full advance, it might be wise to plant more of these heat-resistant trees for our future lumber supply.
