The city is located in Tsimshian territory, they have occupied the harbour for 10,000-plus years. European contact was made in the 18th century and maritime fur trade with the Tsimshian and the neighbouring Nisga’a, Haida and Heiltsuk nations began. It went from a tent city in 1906 to being incorporated in 1910. Shortly after World War 2, a pulp mill was built that increased interest in the port, and more industries followed.
